"The Color of a Promise" (Julianne MacLean) ★★★★★ AVAILABLE NOW!

BOOK SUMMARY
From USA Today bestselling author Julianne MacLean comes the next instalment in her popular Color of Heaven Series, where people are affected by real life magic and wondrous miracles that change everything they once believed about life and love.

Having spent a lifetime in competition with his older brother Aaron—who always seemed to get the girl—Jack Peterson leaves the U.S. to become a foreign correspondent in the Middle East. When a roadside bomb forces him to return home to recover from his wounds, he quickly becomes the most celebrated journalist on television, and is awarded his own prime time news program. Now, wealthy and successful beyond his wildest dreams, Jack believes he has finally found where he is meant to be. But when a commercial airliner explodes in the sky over his summer house in Cape Elizabeth, all hell breaks loose as the wreckage crashes to the ground. He has no idea that his life is about to take another astonishing turn…

Meg Andrews grew up with a fear of flying, but when it meant she wouldn’t be able to visit her boyfriend on the opposite side of the country, she confronted her fear head-on and earned her pilot’s license. Now, a decade later, she is a respected airline crash investigator, passionate about her work to the point of obsession. When she arrives in the picturesque seaside community of Cape Elizabeth to investigate a massive airline disaster, she meets the famous and charismatic Jack Peterson, who has his own personal fascination with plane crashes.

As the investigation intensifies, Meg and Jack feel a powerful, inexplicable connection to each other. Soon, they realize that the truth behind the crash—and the mystery of their connection—can only be discovered through the strength of the human spirit, the timeless bonds of family, and the gift of second chances.

CAT'S REVIEW
"The Color of a Promise" by Julianne MacLean.  I don't know how Ms. MacLean does it, but once again, she has written a tale that was captivating and thought provoking.  She has a knack for making the reader sit back and say, "Hmm, what if?".   The story itself stirs the heart and mind and had me so enthralled, I didn't put it down until it was finished.   Jack, heartbroken after losing the love of his life to his brother, has some very interesting views and thoughts on life.   Jack really grew on me as the story progresses.  Not that I didn't like him to start but I grew to love him by the end.  And Meg is precious.  Together they make a perfect fit.  But the questions abound about Meg and Ms. MacLean certainly draws the reader into wondering about Jack's beliefs about life, both current and previous ones.   The writing is superb and the story flows effortlessly.   Ms. MacLean brings about different perspectives about life and it's meaning.   Having read the previous books in the series, I found that, after finishing each, the story and its characters stay within my mind and heart for a long time.  (note - while I don't think it necessary to read the others first, I highly recommend them).  (received copy for honest review)

“Steve Cassidy. Welcome, Mr. Jordan., We owe you a lot.”  He gripped Cav’s hand, and choked out, “You saved Lia’s life.  Thank you…”
For a moment, Cav was stunned by the sudden kindness emanating from the farmer’s expression who was thin, wiry, sunburned and physically sinewy from the daily work he did.  Gripping the farmer’s calloused roughened hand, he said, “Nice to meet you, sir.  And I was just doing my job.  Call me  Cav?”
“Call me Steve.”  He clapped him heartily on the back, still clasping his other hand.  “And you’re a hero to us, son. Nothing less.”  Steve released him, keeping his hand on Cav’s broad shoulder, watching Lia clinging to he mother, both of them in a tight, loving embrace with one another.
Embarrassed by such a show of emotions, Cav murmured, “Thank you, sir.”
Steve gave him an assessing look.  “Just Steve will do.”
“Yes, sir….I mean, okay,” Cav stumbled.  It was very different meeting people who were strangers, but this was Lia’s parents and he didn’t want to fuck this up for her.  Awkwardly, he stood there, watching tears roll down Susan’s face.  He wasn’t sure that Lia wasn’t crying too, such was the tight bond they shared.  Obliquely, his mind leaped backward.  Cav remembered the times his mother had cried.  But they were tears of pain.  Tears mingled with blood from her nose, a split lip or both after his father got done beating her up.  How many times had Cav cried alone in his room wishing she would run away with him from his monster father?
Steve clapped him on the shoulder.  “Let’s us guys go find your luggage, huh?” and he smiled a little.
            Good idea!  “Yes, sir—“
Steve laughed and patted him warmly on the back.   “You’re staying a week with us, Cav.  I’ll work that military side you out of you by then.  Come on, let’s hunt up that luggage for our you and our Lia, eh?”
There was a male gruffness mingled with warmth to Steve that made Cav want to open up to the man.  He had a deeply weathered face, his blue eyes the same color as Lia’s.  The woman he loved had her mother’s same color of hair, her father’s sparkling, mischievous looking eyes and her smile.  There was benevolence to Steve Cassidy and Cav automatically found himself wanting to be close to this man who exuded a male gentleness he rarely found in any man.  “Thanks for coming to pick us up,” Cav said, noting that the baggage from their flight would be spit out by Carousel Two.
“We’ve been looking forward to seeing you two,” Steve said, standing with his hands on his hips, watching the luggage starting to be dropped off the conveyor belt.  “Did you have a good flight?”
“Yes.  It was quiet. That’s all I ask.”
“We don’t travel much,” he said.  “With a farm, you can’t walk away from it, so I’m glad you came for a visit.”
Cav felt Steve’s genuine sincerity.  He hooked a look over his shoulder, seeing Lia and her mother talking animatedly with one another as they walked toward them.  Susan had given Lia her smile and her beauty, no question.  He liked that the mother had hooked her arm around Lia’s waist and they walked closely, their affection for everyone to see.  He knew Lia’s affection himself and already, he could see how happy she was at being home with her parents once more.  They breathed even more life into her, if that was possible.  Compared to the ghost of a person she was in Costa Rica months earlier, Cav was stunned at Lia’s natural radiance.  She was sunshine to his darkened soul who craved her.
“Uh oh,” Steve murmured, grinning as he turned.  “I’m about to get attacked.”
For a moment, the word put Cav on instant guard. But as he turned, he saw Steve opening his arms as Lia flew into them, her arms wide open, joy radiant on her face as she clung to her father.  A lump formed in his throat as he watched Lia being swallowed up by the big man who kissed her hair, kissed that cheek that had that deep scar on it, his eyes only for his beaming daughter in his arms.  His gaze flicked to Susan, who stood a few feet away, teary eyed, smiling, her lower lip trembling as she watched Lia with her doting father.  It hurt to swallow and Cav turned away, remembering too much of the twisted and distorted family he’d somehow managed to survive.  He’d never known a moment of affection from his father.  Only his fist.  His hatred.  His anger always aimed at him.

“Want to tell me why you threw a winning hand?”
Winter stubbornly firmed her jaw. “I was tired of playing.” She pressed her hands flat on the wall beside her head, trying to gain leverage to push herself away from Viper’s hard body. However, Viper kissed the flesh behind her ear as she felt his hand slide up her leg, bunching her dress to her waist.
“You’re never too tired to play,” Viper contradicted. “You didn’t look tired.” He took her earlobe into his mouth, nibbling on it until she used her butt to try to push him away. She only found herself pressed flatter against the wall.
“Maybe I was tired of watching Sasha look at you like it was you she was fucking,” she snarled over her shoulder.
He gave a low chuckle. “Does it matter, as long as it’s not me fucking her?”
“Yes, dammit! It does! How would you feel if Train was staring…? Never mind. I know how you would feel. You’d think it’s hot.”
“It is hot when I fuck you.”

CAT'S REVIEW
"Wicked Sexy" by JT Geissinger.  Wow!  Ms. Geissinger had me hooked from the first page.  I adored Tabby - she's tough and sassy and really smart.  Yet she's really sweet, too, once you get to know her.  Obviously, Connor is smoking hot - a true hero.  I adored his ability to laugh at her antics and know that, even if she was driving him nuts, he could see down to her true self.  In addition to loving our couple, the story really packs a punch too - this is one story that I read from start to finish without putting it down once!  I needed to know what would happen!  It's an on the edge of your seat tale that keeps the reader biting their nails hoping for the HEA but not really sure if it's going to happen.  The story is involved and in depth but Ms. Geissinger does a great job of keeping the reader right there in it, explaining situations but not going overboard where the reader loses interest.  Having read  and enjoyed "Wicked Beautiful" last week, I was really looking forward to Tabby's story and I am not disappointed. (it's not necessary to read Wicked Beautiful but I highly recommend that story too).   I do hope this series will continue and Ms. Geissinger is able to bring more stories like this - a romance that is filled with humor, suspense and danger and characters that are believable with faults and quirks like the rest of us.  Don't miss this series! I lean against the tile with my arms spread, allowing the water to beat against my back. It’s too hot. I should turn it down, but I don’t bother. Eventually, like everything else, the sensation fades.
I’m not sure how long I’m in that position. A few seconds? A few minutes? But then Easton and his trainer Yefim are suddenly there. “You got lucky, O’Brien,” Yefim calls out, taunting me with his thick eastern European accent.
Shit. Like all the trash talk before the fight wasn’t enough.
“Did you hear me, you pussy?” he fires back when I don’t answer. “Did you hear me, you goddamn coward?”
Coward? Fuck you. It’s what I think, but not what I say, focusing instead on the streams of water that gather along my feet before they swirl into the drain.
It doesn’t help. The rage that’s building, the one I only manage to barely keep in? It stirs in my gut like a heavy pot filled with hate, sin, and all the curses my Ma would still beat my ass for saying.
“What’re you doing?” Yefim asks.
His voice is closer, he’s drawing near. I doesn’t matter that I’m standing here naked. He wants to be next to me. I shudder, that feeling I keep buried drilling its way up.
“I know about you,” Yefim says, not bothering to keep his voice low. “But everyone knows, don’t they? Even if you don’t want them to.”
My body shakes a little more, but it’s not from the cooling water. It’s from his words and all that anger they trigger. Don’t do it. Don’t go there.
“You like to keep it a secret. Don’t you, pussy?”
Yefim laughs when I keep my trap shut. He thinks I’m backing down, just like Easton did before his face met the mat. “He’s crying,” he calls out to Easton. “What? Not so tough now?”
That’s where he’s dead wrong. Every muscle I’ve conditioned serves a purpose―to take down those who fuck with me. And right now, Yefim is seriously fucking with me.
“You like to pretend that it’s girls you like, don’t you?” he says. “But that’s not true, is it? Oh, no, that’s not true at all . . .”
I raise my chin, knowing that someone’s not leaving without bleeding, and I’ve bled enough tonight.
Yefim kicks at my calf. “What? Nothing to say? Can’t speak without your boyfriend here?”
“Boyfriend?” Easton asks, laughing. “No fucking way.”
“Yes. Way,” Yefim insists. “Didn’t you know this little pussy takes it up the ass―”
I punch him so hard, I feel his teeth crack against my knuckles. For someone with decades of boxing experience he never saw me coming. But I see Easton flying at me out of the corner of my eye. I toss him over my shoulder, slamming him hard onto the ceramic tile floor. Like in the octagon, I throw myself on top of him, my fists colliding against his skin.
Voices rush forward, telling me to stop. A woman screams, but I don’t stop fighting off the bodies trying to grab me, breaking through the arms wrenching me back. I need to hit him―I need to feel my fists meeting his face―I need to feel something.
God damn it. I need to feel alive.
I don’t want the pain.
I don’t want the terror.
But once more, it’s all I feel.

CAT'S REVIEW

"Wicked Beautiful" by J.T. Geissinger is a story that, I have to be honest, took me by surprise.  I expected it to be a bit more predictable and, not a big fan of heroines that are a bit witchy, I grew to really, really like Victoria.  Of course, Parker is yummy and, despite his playboy ways, I adored how he treated Victoria.  The plot is based on a revenge theme (again, not usually one of my faves) but was told is such a way that had me turning the pages to see if Victoria would really do it and, also to find out, if Parker could break through the ice around her heart.  The author does an incredible job of keeping the reader on their toes - some twists and surprises that I didn't expect.  The interactions between Victoria and Parker were hot and sexy yet sweet and tender at times too.  The banter between the two had me chuckling at times and my heart was definitely engaged throughout this entertaining tale.  I look forward to reading book two, "Wicked Sexy" coming out soon and discovering Tabby's story.  (received copy for honest review)

“No. I'm afraid you just missed her, but I can schedule you for Monday morning if that's all right.” Though handsome, his blatant interest didn't stir the heart-fluttering, chaotic beat associated with Marc’s presence.
“Sure, darlin’. What time is good for you?” Leaning over the bi-level counter allowed him visual access to her organized space. “Ah…I see you read erotic romance. I have a sister that writes for a large, New York publisher.”
Oh hell. Her fingers couldn't move fast enough to hide the book's cover, a leather-clad man handcuffing his naked woman’s upper arms behind her back in front of a spanking bench. In her haste to hide the cover, she inadvertently skid the book off the counter, landing several feet to Marc’s side. Where else would it land?
His swift reflexes resulted in scooping up the offending material. After a quick glance at the cover, his head tilted back and forth, as if judging the merits of the scene depicted and finding it lacking in some specific way. Something inside her dictated he’d return the book—for a price.
Fiery heat blazed up her neck to engulf her face, becoming an inferno worthy of a three-alarm fire. His shaking shoulders did nothing for her composure. Yeah, and he owns the BDSM club thirty miles away.
“How about Monday morning at ten-thirty. Uh, your name, sir?” After fumbling the appointment card twice, she placed it on the counter and grabbed the nearby pen. Panic became a palpable pressure in her chest. Perspiration dotted her forehead and spine between her shoulder blades.
“Clayton Hutson and that sounds great, darlin’. I'll see you then…unless you'd let me take you to dinner tonight.”
“Sorry, Mr. Hutson, I’m busy tonight.” I think I’ll just call you slick.
“Well, how about lunch tomorrow?”
Something in his distinct and intense scrutiny now scared her shitless, a foreboding she hadn’t endured for three years. The prickling along her nape and arms never happened randomly. Blood drained from her face to leave her shaken at the sight of his rough hands on the counter, calloused hands that could wield a garrote with expertise. Could he be the serial killer responsible for the recent murders?
The fact he stood before her, overshadowing and transmitting such bad vibes ensured she wouldn't feel safe for a long time, even if he just saw her as a sexual conquest.
Under normal circumstances, discerning someone's goals amounted to a simple exercise, whether honest or nefarious, but Marc's overwhelming effect on her mindset obliterated her ability to pick up slick's intentions.
A suggestive throat clearing transferred her attention back to Marc, whose demeanor revealed no evidence of his earlier carefree banter. “No, Hutson. She's with me.” His expression lost all signs of levity as he crowded closer to her workspace, edging the other man out. “I'll pick you up at ten a.m., Dani. Okay?” Darius's combination whine-growl elicited a like response in the other dog. Each shepherd’s attunement to his master’s emotions came as no surprise.
Hutson’s face broadcast a tangle of warning signs she’d label aggressive if expressed in canine form, non-blinking, direct eye contact, dilated pupils, hardened jaw, and a predator’s grin.
Her well-planned intentions evaporated like seawater meeting magma, the haze forming smothered the intricate workings of her mind. At this point, mangled words were a useless commodity. She merely nodded.
“Right then. Have a good day, Mr. Hutson.” Marc's conspicuous dismissal earned him a groan and insincere apology.
“Sorry, man. Didn't know she was taken. It’s not as if she's wearing a ring or collar. Nice dog by the way. I watched him track in his first trial. Good nose in bad weather and difficult cover.” His calculating gaze bore into Marc as if gauging the likelihood of winning a dirty, no-holds-barred fight; his shark’s grin hid nothing.
Hutson’s departure allowed Dani to draw a slow lungful of toxin-purging air. “Thank you, Marc. He made me a bit nervous for some reason.”
“Welcome. Any time. He kicked my sixth sense into overdrive, too. You all right? You turned white as a sheet. Do you know him from somewhere?” Darius whined and chuffed, pulling on his leash until Marc let go. “What's up, boy? You never misbehave…”
Barreling around the counter to rub against her thigh, Darius’ chest rumbled when Dani buried her face in the long hair at his neck. “Aw, sweetie. It's all right. You're such a good boy.” His fur smelled of oatmeal and vanilla shampoo, the same she used with dog baths in the office. “I’ve never seen that guy before, but he gave me the creeps.”
“We'll hang around until you leave.” More a command than offer, his statement, along with his expression, brooked no argument.
“Thanks. Something about him…” The soft fur against her cheek imbued a soothing calm, unattainable through any other means.
“Yeah, me too. Anyway, about tomorrow, give me your address and I'll pick you up.”
“Oh. I thought you just said that to get me off the hook with Hutson. You really don't need to bother.” Miles of blood vessels conveyed scorching, liquid heat blazing a trail up her neck and across her face. Intervention via reality proved to be a bitch. She stood no chance holding her own with this man turned demi-god.
“No trouble at all. That way I can check and make sure you’re all right.”
“How 'bout I meet you there.” The less information she gave a man like this, the better. Dangerous in his own way, Marc Crofton embodied thoughts of lust, dreams of bondage, large wooden X’s, and unspeakable toys wringing out mind-blowing sensations. Like any man would want a girl like me.
“Ahh…I look forward to earning your trust. Perhaps after a day at the trials, you'd join me for dinner.” He didn’t just set the book down on her workspace, no, he had to make a meal of it, placing it conspicuously then patting the cover.
“Oh, I-I don't eat dinner. Well, um, I eat dinner but not on weekends. No. Actually, I don't go out on weekends…Well, I go out….” Any minute, tears of humiliation would stain her cheeks. “I don't date.” Crap, just shoot me now.
“That’s fine. I'm not ready for a date, either. Good thing we cleared that up. We'll just grab a bite to eat. I'd hate to keep you out all day and return you home tired and hungry, very bad manners.” The look in his gaze spoke of insatiable appetites, steamy, erotic, raw nights filled with breathless screams and creative, salacious undertakings. Carnal whispers filtered through her mind, encouraged by her rich imagination and curious nature to form a solid wall of longing buffeted by her long-suffering, low self-esteem.
