KISS ME THAT WAY
Cottonbloom #1
Laura Trentham
Releasing May 31st, 2016
St. Martin's Paperbacks

A river divides Cottonbloom in two: the upscale enclave on the Mississippi side and the rundown, rough and tumble side in Louisiana. They’re worlds apart—but nothing can build a bridge like love…

Cade Fournette never had it easy Cottonbloom. He stuck around long enough to raise his orphaned siblings and then hightailed it out West—and never looked back. Even though he’s made a success of himself in Seattle, Cade never lost the toughness and the angry edge that helped him survive down South. His only weak spot: the girl he left behind…

Monroe Kirby came from the wealthy side of town, but that didn’t protect her from her mother’s drinking—or her mother’s boyfriend. It was Cade who did that, on a long-ago hot September night, before he disappeared…along with a piece of her heart. Now Monroe is a physical therapist who can fight for herself, and it’s Cade who could use some conditioning when he makes an unexpected return back home. Will he and Monroe pick up where they left off and finally explore their mutual passion—or will the scars and secrets of the past divide them once more?

EXCERPT

“You left Cottonbloom without telling me. Without saying good-bye. I want to know why.” Monroe hadn’t meant for the words to come out at all, much less with such vehemence.
“It was complicated.” Cade broke eye contact. “You were a good kid in a bad situation.”
“Weren’t you a good kid in a bad situation?”
He shifted toward her, bracing a hand on the dash and laying his other arm over the back of her seat, invading her space. She didn’t retreat. His intensity spurred her heart rate into an erratic gallop, yet she wasn’t intimidated. Perhaps it was only echoes of the past, but he made her feel safe, even when he was the one she should be scared of.
“I grew up fast and tough.” His voice contained more than a hint of warning.
“You were nice to me,” she said softly.
“Don’t fool yourself into thinking I’m nice. I wasn’t then, and I’m sure as hell not now.”
He ran a callused finger down her cheek, the rasp igniting her nerve endings like a flint. His hand continued south and wrapped itself in her braid, the slight tug on her scalp sending shivers through her body in spite of the sun bearing down on the truck. Her nipples felt tight, and she hoped her tight sports tank masked her sudden, inexplicable arousal.
He pulled her braid, forcing her toward him. She didn’t fight him. He dropped his face next to hers, his coarse beard hair caressing her cheek, his mouth close to her ear. “If I see something I want, I go after it and get it by any means necessary.”
“How very Machiavellian.” She tried a laugh, but it came out more like a stuttering sigh. His scent hooked her even closer, and her lips grazed the outer rim of his ear.
He pulled back, his green-eyed gaze roving her face. She returned the favor, noting the faint brackets around his mouth, the crinkles at his eyes, the thick beard. A full-grown man. Yet was he so different from the boy she remembered?
“Ovid.” The movement of his lips jammed the cogs of her brain. The word made no sense. Her confusion must have been obvious, because the mouth she stared at tipped up in the corners, deepening the grooves. “The Greek philosopher Ovid, not Machiavelli, actually wrote: The end justifies the means.”
“Ovid. Of course.” Apparently, Monroe had slept through that philosophy class at Ole Miss. The fact that high-school dropout Cade Fournette was quoting Ovid made her wonder what other mysteries she might uncover if she went digging.
Just when she was ready to grab a shovel, he released her braid and slipped away. His limp was less pronounced as he took the stairs holding the cane parallel to the ground. Although he’d physically released her, she felt bound to him in some other fundamental way, incapable of tearing her eyes off him until he disappeared behind Sawyer’s front door. Even then, she sat, unable to drive away for a long minute.
How could the simple brush of Cade’s finger ignite a fire when other men left her cold? As her arousal ebbed, she realized something else. She’d just been manipulated by a master. He hadn’t explained why he left.
She spent the evening going through the motions of her life, eating when her stomach growled and heading to bed when her eyes felt heavy. A few short hours ago, her life had been tidy and predictable and boring. Cade Fournette’s return had spun her into chaos.

CAT'S REVIEW

"Kiss Me That Way" by Laura Trentham.  Cade and Monroe have a history, although it's not your typical love gone wrong history.  After years apart, can they pick up where they left off?  Monroe has worked hard to become independent and self sufficient.  She doesn't want to depend on others for her well being but can she open up enough to let Cade in?  I liked Monroe and her desire to help others as well as herself.  Cade took a bit longer for me to warm up to, although by the end, I have to admit, he had me swooning.  He's a sexy hunk, that's for sure.  He is distant and determined to be the boy from the wrong side of the tracks, despite how life changes and people grow.  I enjoyed Ms. Trentham's tale that had me holding my breath a bit, cheering for our couple, gritting my teeth at both main characters and wanting to both shake them at times and then give them each a big hug too.  The story is paced well and there is an element of danger too - just enough to keep the reader on the edge a bit.  If you enjoy a story that has strong characters, a storyline that keeps you turning the pages and lots of feel good moments too, than "Kiss Me That Way" is the one for you.  (received copy from NetGalley for honest review)

AUTHOR INFO

I am an avid reader of novels with a deep passion for writing. From an early age, I started writing short stories for pleasure. I knew the dozens of romance novels I devoured were onto something when I met my husband at fifteen and fell in love after a week!
Life got in the way and I stopped writing for years. Then at the age of twenty-six with a degree in Human Resource Management I decided to focus on my passion—writing. I especially love romance and adore writing sensually hot paranormal fantasy, historical and contemporary stories.
I live a lot in the worlds I create and I actively speak to my characters (out loud). I have a warrior way “never give up on my dream.” When I am not writing, I spend a copious amount of time drooling over Rick Grimes from Walking Dead, watching Japanese Anime and playing video games with my love—Dusean Nelson.
Some Random Things About Me
1.     I cannot swim, but I can float thanks to Melissa “Misa” Bourbon Ramirez and
Gwen Hayes
2.     As a child I was so skinny my nickname was “Bag of bones”
3.     I love ice cream and I adore chocolate, but I hate chocolate ice cream
4.     I skipped many classes during high school to devour novels at the local library

6.     I hate washing the dishes. If you were to torture me nail pulling would not work, but washing dishes will
7.     I have worn my hair boy-cut short seven times in my life
8.     I love when it rains
9.     I lived in a house for six years without doors and windows
10.  My absolute favourite TV series is AMC’s The Walking Dead

BOOK SUMMARY

Fiercely independent Janie Jansen has always believed there were worse things in life than being blind, and she’s spent her life proving it. She’s moved away from her overprotective parents, built a life in New York City, and is one of the top technical editors in her company. That is, until an unfortunate accident turns her life upside down and she’s forced to give up the very independence she’s worked so hard to achieve.

Firefighter Boyd Hudson pushed past his tragic past and is weeks away from accomplishing his ultimate dream—being accepted into medical school. His intense focus on his goal while working three jobs has taken its toll. With a trail of failed relationships behind him, Boyd is painstakingly aware of his limitations and avoids girlfriends completely—a difficult task given his attraction to one of his co-workers.

When Boyd comes to Janie’s rescue, she’s forced to accept his help, and Janie discovers there’s more to the sexy-sounding office flirt than one-liners. Their connection deepens as Janie heals, but it turns out that Janie isn’t the only one who needs healing. Boyd’s painful past comes back to haunt him, threatening their relationship and forcing Boyd to reevaluate everything he knows about himself.

CAT'S REVIEW
"Touched by Love" by Melissa Foster.  This is a heartwarming tale that had me cheering and hoping for that HEA with each page turned.  Our main characters are Boyd and Janie.  I adored Boyd.  He survived a terrible tragedy yet didn't let him hold him back of pursuing his dreams.  Janie, being blind, has fought hard for her independence.  While I liked that she is strong and can take care of herself, at times her stubborness to be independent did irk me a bit.  Everyone needs someone to lean on once in a while.  Together, Janie and Boyd were a perfect pair.  He was incredibly patient and kind and caring.  And she got him and made him feel whole.  There is a bit of angst as both need to follow their dreams but what happens when their dreams lead them in different directions?  Ms. Foster's writing style flows easily and keeps the reader interested and involved.  The storyline is believable as are the characters within.  Ms. Foster has again written a story that I find to be entertaining, believable and incredibly romantic.  (received copy for honest review)

A thin beam of moonlight streaming across the end of my bed is the only thing I can see in the darkness of my bedroom. The light starts to creep up the wall of my room as the door opens wider. I struggle to catch my breath as fear begins to overtake me and adrenaline races through my body. My heart is pounding so hard in my chest and my ears are ringing from the pressure building up in my head. A tall, dark figure is standing in the corner of the room and I immediately start gasping for the air to fill my lungs. I feel like I am suffocating. The figure begins to move closer to the bed.  My lungs are frantically working to draw in the air they need to expand and my body begins to shake uncontrollably.
“I told you that I would not let you go,” a deep, raspy voice says.  I know the voice. This is a voice that I have heard thousands of times over the last two years. The voice of a man I have loved and trusted with my heart.
“Liam?” I ask breathlessly. “What are you doing?  I manage to get out past the lump in my throat.
Liam lets out a deep, throaty laugh as he makes his way over to the bed. He stands over me holding a single red rose. His sinister eyes glare down at me and I realize this is not the man I fell in love with. That man is gone. A total stranger has replaced him.
“I told you I would never leave you alone. I made you a promise and I intend to keep it.” Liam begins pulling something out from behind his back and the unmistakable sound of a gun cocking fills the air.
            “NO!” …

CAT'S REVIEW
"Shattered Pieces" by Christie Corbin tells the story of Chandler and Tori.  Chandler is yummy!  A sexy firefighter whose only desire is Tori and to keep her safe.  I liked Tori as well.  She is working hard at moving on after a bad relationship.  She is strong yet understands the need to lean on others at times.  It always bothers me when heroines feel they don't need anyone else and try to do it all on their own.    I didn't quite understand some of her decisions, though, especially when it came to the "gifts" she was receiving but still, I admired her willingness to move forward, even if it was difficult.   While, at times, I thought the details of some scenes were a bit much, it did help put the reader into the scene and understand the thoughts and actions of the characters.  The flow and pace of the story is good, although, a time or two, was a tad bid slow for me.  Ms. Corbin covers some serious issues throughout the book and I found she did an admirable job.  Being this is Ms. Corbin's debut, I was pleased with the result and will certainly look to read future works by her as she develops and grows as an author.  (received copy for honest review)
