BOOK SUMMARY
For readers of Linda Lael Miller and Susan Mallery comes New York Times bestselling author Joan Johnston’s sizzling contemporary Western romance, where power, money, and rivalries rule—and love is the best revenge.
WHILE HE SEEKS A HAVEN,
SHE SEARCHES FOR A PLACE TO CALL HOME
After a tragic accident leaves Delta sergeant Connor Flynn a widower, he faces the toughest fight of his life: battling his in-laws for custody of his two young children. To win he’ll need a make-believe bride to take care of the kids while he runs his Wyoming ranch. Who better than a woman he already knows and likes—his late wife’s best friend?
Ruthlessly forced from her home by her powerful father, King Grayhawk, Eve needs somewhere to go . . . and so does the herd of wild mustangs she’s rescued. Connor’s offer sounds like the answer to a prayer. But Eve has a guilty secret she’s guarded for years: She’s always been in love with Connor.
Now forced to live under the same roof as her heart’s desire, Eve must hide the love that has never died, while Connor vows to resist his growing need for a woman who was forbidden fruit during his marriage. Can two lonely people set adrift by fate and haunted by guilt find redemption in the healing embrace of love?

EXCERPT
It’s difficult to “cut”
material that took hours to write, but sometimes it just isn’t working. In order to “let it go” I move all “cut”
scenes to a file called “STUFF.” I ended up with 42 pages of “stuff” in my sin.stuff
file when I was done with the book.
Usually this “stuff” never sees the light of day, but I’m happy to share
a scene with you. When I reviewed this
scene it didn’t look bad. But when you
read Sinful you’ll discover that the
nature of the characters’ “make-believe marriage” changed, so this scene had to
go.
Connor
didn’t want to let her go. He realized
that was selfish, considering that Eve’s hopes and dreams were bound up in
saving America’s wild mustangs, not in being his wife and the stepmother to two
rambunctious kids. But whenever he tried
broaching the subject of staying, she put him off. Or reminded him that staying married likely
wasn’t an option. If he lost his trust
fund, she’d pointed out, he’d lose his ranch.
And if he lost his ranch, she’d lose a place to keep her mustangs.
She was right, of course.
But it didn’t make him feel any better about the situation. He had to come up with some solution to the
problem—other than giving up Eve—before his father cut him off.
"Sinful" by Joan Johnston. This is a story of true love that was denied but never died. Connor and Eve were attracted to each other as teenagers but, fate was against them. Now, although tragic, circumstances have brought them back together. I liked Eve - she was torn about her feelings for Connor and what she should do about them. She was a good person that only wanted to help and didn't want to betray her family or her best friend's memory. I was cheering for her throughout the story. Connor, a war vet, struggles with some guilt as well and with lots of family strife. He's a strong person that will follow his conviction for what he believes in and for what and who he loves. I was hoping for a bit more with Eve and Brooke and Sawyer to see how their relationship developed. Even more with just Eve and Connor - often the story involved the other characters - I only wish to have a few extra scenes of just the two of them as they discovered their love for each other. This story had me smiling at bits but also made me sad at times. It has some happiness and heartache and some joyful scenes too. I look forward to Ms. Johnston's sharing of the stories of the other Flynns and Grayhawks in the future. (received copy from NetGalley for honest review)
