“What happened to your arm?” Griffin asked Ava.

She turned to grab the bucket. “I hit it on the service cart. It’s nothing, really.”

“It’s not nothing. Let me see.” He reached for her at the same time wondering what he was doing. Why couldn’t he just leave it alone?

“No. I…” Her gaze jerked to his hand as he gently wrapped his fingers around her fine-boned wrist. She pulled away from him, wrenching her arm as she did. He noted her desperate attempt to contain the pained gasp, the flash of panic in her eyes.

They were the same, her eyes. They no longer lit up with laughter and passion, but they were just as incredibly beautiful as they used to be. Her eyes were the only thing about her that was remotely familiar. Maybe they were the reason he couldn’t let it go. The reason he took her hand, despite her murmured protest, and carefully pushed up the sleeve of her sweater.

His breath hissed through his teeth. Her forearm was almost completely black and blue. He raised his gaze to hers. “You didn’t get this from banging your arm on the service cart.”

She wouldn’t meet his eyes as she tried to push her sleeve back down. “I hit it again last night. Please, Griffin, it’s just a bruise.”

“You sure about that? It looks pretty bad to me. Maybe you have a hairline fracture. Did you let Doc Bishop take a look?”

She pulled away again, and this time he let her go. They hadn’t been alone together in a long time. He hadn’t stood this close to her or held her hand, and he didn’t like the uncomfortable pressure building in his chest. He tried to convince himself that it was nothing—just a reaction to seeing the extensive bruising. His protective instincts were strong. That’s all it was. He’d react the same to anyone with a similar injury. But with Ava, he didn’t want to feel anything. Not one damn thing.

CAT'S REVIEW

"Starlight Bridge" by Debbie Mason.  This tale is one of second chances and renewed true love.  Ava and Griffin married young and divorced young, but no one but Ava knew why.  I liked Ava a lot and my heart hurt for her.  Showing her strength, she struggled through and did what she needed to do to survive.  Griffin was sexy and sweet and amazingly understanding too.  There are many secondary characters, which at times was a bit confusing, but didn't take away, too much, from Ava and Griffin's story.  I adored Colleen but never warmed up to Lexi.  I found the first part of the book was quite emotional and had me turning each page almost regretfully yet eagerly to see what awaited our couple next.  The author brought me to tears several times and my heart hurt.  However, I did find that some of the resolutions that occurred were just a bit too over the top for me and took away from the journey of Ava and Griffin, making the beauty of their love a little less.   Overall, this is an enjoyable read that showcases love, family and friendships.  I will most certainly look forward to reading future works by this author.  (received copy from NetGalley for honest review)

Sophie heard a familiar, deep laugh and went up on her tiptoes, following it to a table a few feet to the right of the stage where Liam and Michael sat. Michael banged his beer bottle on the table, chanting, “Liam, Liam.” A chant that was taken up by the surrounding tables. Sophie was about to turn to Ava and Dana and point out where the two men were sitting when she felt herself being maneuvered through the crowd toward the stage.

“You have got to be kidding me,” she yelled to be heard over the crowd. “You set me up!”

 “You were always trying to sneak in here to hear him sing. Now’s your chance. He wasn’t trying to sabotage the wedding, but you were being stubborn and wouldn’t hear him out. So . . .” Ava shrugged.

“You know what they say about payback, right?” But she wasn’t thinking about payback when Liam got up on the stage and accepted a guitar from a bearded man. She heard Dana and Ava talking behind her, and then they were tugging on the sleeves of Sophie’s coat.

“What do you think you’re doing?”

“You’re looking a little warm,” Dana said.

Sophie sighed. Dana was right. She let them take off her coat. “Michael,” Ava yelled and tossed it in his direction. He grinned and raised his hands to catch it, but something caught his eye and the coat landed on the table. Sophie turned to see what he was looking at. A woman in black leather pants and jacket carrying a motorcycle helmet in her hand had just walked into the bar. Her long, black hair was pulled back into a severe ponytail. She was stunning and fierce looking, and Sophie knew who it was right away. Shay Angel. Maybe it was a good thing she’d been set up after all. She could make sure Michael and Shay didn’t spend any time together.

But then the band started to play and Sophie only had eyes for the man center stage. He was looking right at her with a smile on his face. A smile she’d always dreamed would one day be directed at her. Sexy, hot, and filled with promises. Just like his voice when he started singing “Galway Girl,” only he changed black hair to brown, blue eyes to brown, Galway girl to Gallagher girl.

Dana leaned into her when he came down off the stage. “It’s like that scene in P.S. I Love You.”

Sophie couldn’t respond even if she wanted to. Liam was in front of her, singing to her while the crowd sang along and clapped, stomping their feet in time to the music. Liam was a born performer. He played to the crowd, his voice deep and raspy. He circled her, moving closer each time. Then, just as the song ended, he cupped the back of her head and kissed her long and hard before saying to her in a thick Irish brogue, “Are you going to take me back to your room, my Gallagher girl?”

"Mistletoe Cottage" by Debbie Mason is a delightful tale of hope and love and Christmas Spirit.  Sophie, our heroine, is a strong woman, even if she doesn't always feel that way.  Life has handed her quite a few bumps along the way but she tries so hard to perservere.   She did frustrate me a bit at times, as I was hoping for honesty from her but also understood her stance and decision making too.  Liam, our Hero, is sexy, sweet and strong.  I adored him.  He is simply wonderful with not just Sophie, but her daughter Mia too.  Their relationship develops at a lovely pace, both having had feelings for the other years before but some of those bumps of life got in their way.  Ms. Mason has written a story that has a few twists, some different ideas and, of course, true love.  I enjoyed the secondary characters as well, especially Rosa and Colleen.  Being honest, as this is book one of the series, I did find catching up with who was who a bit confusing in the beginning, as there are many characters introduced.  However, I caught up and was able to fully enjoy the story as it progressed.   If you are looking for a feel-good holiday tale, I'd certainly recommend picking up this one and enjoying it with a cup of hot cocoa in front of a crackling fire.  (received copy for honest review)
