BOOK SUMMARY

Spinster Miss Eleanor Lockhart is suddenly homeless and employment is her only option. Ruined after succumbing to a scoundrel’s excessive charm nearly a decade ago, she’s lucky to obtain a position as a paid companion and committed to behaving with the utmost propriety. She definitely shouldn’t be in the arms of a man capable of utterly destroying what little remains of her reputation...
Titus St. John, Duke of Kendal, is known as the Forbidden Duke, a mysterious, intimidating figure who enters Society just once each year at his stepmother’s ball. A decade ago, he was a devil-may-care rake until his idle roguery brought about the ruin of Eleanor Lockhart—and his resulting self-imposed isolation. Now she’s back, and she needs his help. But by “saving” her, he may just ruin her life all over again.

The library was not a small chamber, however it seemed somehow smaller tonight. Kendal’s presence seemed to invade every nook and inhabit every cranny, and Nora was nearly overcome with awareness. And nervousness.
She rushed to say something to put herself at ease. “I quite enjoy the Satterfields’ library.”
He paused, pivoting toward the bookcases that marched along one wall. “Do you? What are your favorites?”
Nora wondered what he’d think of her tastes, which ran the gamut from romantic novels to gothic tales to poetry to suspenseful narratives. “I have many. I’m afraid it’s difficult to choose.”
“What’s the last one you read then?”
She hesitated, but only briefly. “A romantic novel by Sarah Wilkinson.” Presumably, he’d find her tastes lacking.
“I’ve read all of her books.”
Nora looked up at him in surprise. “You read Sara Wilkinson?”
He gave her a sly look. “Perhaps you noticed that Lady Satterfield owns every title. She’s always had a penchant for such stories, and, in my youth, I read everything I could get my hands on. Everything.”
Nora pressed her fingers to her mouth and giggled. “Do you like romantic novels?”
“I don’t dislike them. If I’m in a particular mood, I’ve been known to read three or four in a week.”
Her giggles turned to outright laughter. “The Forbidden Duke reads tawdry romances? What would the ton say?”
“I don’t give a damn what anyone says, but I suppose that would cause a stir.”
How lovely it must be not to care—not to have to care—what others said about you. “Everything you do causes a stir,” she said, her laughter dying down. “The novels would make you seem more human, however.” She inwardly winced at how awful that sounded. “Oh dear, please forgive me. I didn’t mean to infer you aren’t human.”
He took her hand and tucked her fingers beneath his coat, guiding her palm flat against his waistcoat directly over his heart. “You can feel that I am.”
Nora’s breath caught. She looked up at him, her gaze locking with his. “I never doubted it.”

CAT'S REVIEW

"The Forbidden Duke" by Darcy Burke.  This is a historical romance set in the 1800's in London.  It's a quick, enjoyable read that is well written and flows nicely.  Our main characters are Nora and Titus.  Nora was ruined years ago and settled on a life as a spinster.  I found her to be endearing.  Over the years she grew to be a woman that was confident in herself and was kind and caring and had a appreciation for anything that was good in her life.  Titus, known as The Forbidden Duke and and Untouchable, has much to regret, including his part in ruining Nora many years ago.  He wants to make things right for her which encompasses the type of man he truly is.  Of course, he devilishly handsome but he also has a tender heart.  The story itself is not overly dramatic - no really big drama scenes or angst but it's works.  It's a pleasant story that makes the reader feel good about love and life. As the first book of a new series, it has grabbed my attention and I look forward to the next.  (received copy for honest review)

AUTHOR INFO

Darcy Burke is the USA Today bestselling author of hot, action-packed historical and sexy, emotional contemporary romance. Darcy wrote her first book at age 11, a happily-ever-after about a swan addicted to magic and the female swan who loved him, with exceedingly poor illustrations.
A native Oregonian, Darcy lives on the edge of wine country with her guitar-strumming husband, their two hilarious kids-who each seem to have inherited the writing gene in some form-and two Bengal cats. In her "spare" time Darcy is a serial volunteer enrolled in a 12-step program where one learns to say "no," but she keeps having to start over. Her happy places are Disneyland and Labor Day weekend at the Gorge.

BOOK SUMMARY
In a town as small as Ribbon Ridge and with a family as large as the Archers, even the best kept secrets don’t stay buried for long...

Tori Archer is married…well, on paper anyway. She hasn’t actually seen her husband since the disastrous morning after their impulsive Vegas wedding. The memories of their intense passion may still make her weak in the knees, but Tori knows their marriage was a mistake.

After six months filming abroad, television producer Sean Hennessy wants nothing more than to track down his sexy, captivating wife and get her into bed… fast. So when his boss sends him to Oregon to persuade the famous Archer sextuplets-the former stars of a reality TV show-to do a reunion special, Sean sees the perfect chance to win Tori back.

Only, Tori wants nothing to do with him and is determined to push him away. But their attraction is as hot as ever and Sean will do anything to prove their relationship was more than just a fling…because he knows that when real love happens, it changes everything.

Ribbon Ridge, Oregon

Tori Archer sipped her Nocktoberfest, Dads signature beer for the annual Ribbon Ridge Oktoberfest, which was currently in full swing. She clung to the corner of the huge tent, defensively watching for her “date” or one of her annoying siblings that had forced her to go on this “date.”
It wasnt really a date. He was a professional colleague, and the Archers had invited him to their signature event. For nine years, the family had sponsored the towns Oktoberfest. It featured Archer beer and this year, for the first time, a German feast overseen by her brother Kyle, who was an even more amazing chef than theyd all realized. Today was day three of the festival and she still wasnt tired of the fondue. But really, could one ever tire of cheese?
Boo!
Tori jumped, splashing a few drops of beer from her plastic mug into her fingers. She turned her head and glared at Kyle. “Did you sneak through the flap in the corner behind me?”
“Guilty.” He wore an apron tied around his waist and a custom Archer shirt, which read CHEF below the bow and arrow A-shaped logo. “How else was I supposed to talk to you? Youve been avoiding everyone for the past hour and a half. Wheres Cade?” He scanned the crowd looking for her not-date, the engineer theyd hired to work on The Alex, the hotel and restaurant venue theyd been renovating since last spring. With a special events space already completed, theyd turned their focus to the restaurant and would tackle the hotel next.
Tori took a drink of the dark amber Nocktoberfest and relished the hoppy flavor. “Dont know.”
Kyle gave her a sidelong glance. “Didnt you come together?”
“No. Though it wasnt for your lack of trying. I met him here. We chatted. He saw someone he knew. I excused myself to get a beer.” An hour ago.
Kyle turned toward her and frowned. “I don’t get it. Lurking in corners isnt your style. Youre typically the life of the party. You work a room better than anyone I know, except maybe Liam.”
Tori narrowed her eyes. “Im better at it than he is.” Their brother Liam, a successful real estate magnate in Denver, possessed many of the same qualities she did: ambition, drive, and an absolute hatred of failure. Then again, who wanted to fail? But it was more than that for them. Failure was never an option.
Which didnt mean that it didnt occasionally come up and take a piece out of you when you were already down for the count.
Kyle snorted. “Yeah, whatever. You two can duke it out at Christmas or whenever Liam decides to deign us with his presence.”
Tori touched his arm. “Hey, don’t take his absence personally. He keeps his visits pretty few and far between, even before you moved back home. Which is more than I can say for you when you were in Florida.”
Kyles eyes clouded briefly with regret and he looked away. “Yeah, I know. And hopefully some day youll stop giving me shit about it.”
She laughed. “Too soon? Im not mad at you for leaving anymore. I get why you had to go, but Im your sister. I will always flip you shit about stuff like that. Its my job.”
He returned his attention to her, his blue-green eyes—nearly identical to her own—narrowing. “Then its my duty to harass you about Cade. Hes totally into you. Why are you dogging him?”
It seemed that since Kyle and their sister Sara had both found their soul mates this year they expected everyone else to do the same. Granted, their adopted brother Derek had also found his true love, and theyd gotten married in August. What none of them knew, however, was that Tori was already spoken for—at least on paper.

CAT'S REVIEW
"When Love Happens" is the story of Tori and Sean.  They met, had a whirlwind romance, fell in love and got married very quickly.  But due to Sean's work schedule and a family tragedy, they are now further apart then two people ever could be.  I absolutely adored Sean.  He's hardworking, kind, patient, loving and determined - he loves Tori and will fight for her and their marriage.  Oh, and he's English, too, so I could hear his accent in  my head whenever he spoke.  Tori, I had a harder time liking her.  I never fully understood her. I did feel bad for her as she was highly affected by the family tragedy and tried to be strong for her family.   Overall, she seems to be a good person - caring and loving, just not with Sean.  It frustrated me how she treated him.  I enjoyed the story line - there was just enough drama and angst to make it enjoyable without the reader becoming too anxious.  The secondary characters, mostly Tori's siblings (she's a sextuplet) were wonderful.  I haven't read the previous book in this series but don't think that it affected the storyline (although I suppose it would have given me a bit more background but don't think I missed anything because of not reading it).  This is one that I would recommend and I look forward to catching up on the first two books of the Ribbon Ridge series.  (Received book from Edelweiss for honest review)
