"Fighting for Devlin" (Jessica Lemmon) ★★★

BOOK SUMMARY

Perfect for fans of Christina Lauren and Katy Evans, Jessica Lemmon's irresistible Lost Boys series kicks off with the story of a good girl who plays by the rules—and the bad boy who brings out her wild side.

Devlin Calvary makes his own luck. Orphaned as a young child, he was taken in by a crew of bookies and gamblers—and they became his family. They're the reason Dev's running a trendy bistro, living in a high rise, and enjoying the good life with a string of women who never ask for too much. Until, one night, he finds out how much it hurts to trust the wrong people. . . .

Rena Lewis sticks to the straight and narrow, determined not to slip up again . . . like the terrible night of partying four years ago that ended in tragedy. A waitress at Oak & Sage, she knows that sleeping with her boss is not a smart move. But when Dev shows up on her doorstep, beat up and clearly shaken, Rena's not about to turn him down . . . or kick him out of bed.

Dev reawakens something primal within her—a need to go wild. And Rena soon finds out that the heart she'd sealed away years ago still has the power to fight for love.

CAT'S REVIEW
I was excited to receive this ARC from NetGalley for this book by Jessica Lemmon- I've previously read several of her works and enjoyed them immensely.  So, I'm sad to say I was a bit disappointed with "Fighting for Devlin".  While the main characters - Rena and Devlin, are ok and at times, I really liked them, there were too many times that I didn't like them.  Rena came across very immature and I didn't care for Devlin or the way he acted.  He came across as a jerk for most of the book.  I did grow to like them both but it took quite a long time for that to happen.  The story itself had promise and was a bit different storyline then I usually read -Devlin is a true bad boy, involved in illegal gambling.  Overall, I wasn't overly thrilled or so intrigued by this one that I found I had to work to finish it.  I did and am glad that I found out what happens and grew to enjoy the story a bit more towards the end.  I will continue to be a fan of Ms. Lemmon but will probably just stay away from this series.  (received copy from NetGalley for honest review)

CAT'S REVIEW
"Some Girls Lie' by Amy Andrews is a fairly quick read that was sweet and enjoyable.  There's a touch of danger, some heartache, lust and love, and family and friends. Ethan and JJ have been friends forever.  JJ - loved her.  My heart hurt for her and her unrequited feelings towards Ethan but no one could ask for a better friend than JJ.  Ethan, despite not seeing what's right in front of his eyes, is a good guy- sexy and hunky and a really great dad.  Despite not having read the earlier books in this series, I had no trouble following along and am now interested in reading those as well.  The plot was easy to follow and kept the reader interested and invested.  I thoroughly enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more from Ms. Andrews in the future.   (received copy from NetGalley for honest review)

CAT'S REVIEW

"Defending Hayden" by L.P. Dover is a sweet, exciting love story.  Right off the bat, Ms. Dover had my heart breaking for Derek - despite his rough go of it, he's truly a great all around guy - sexy, strong, kind and caring.  Oh, and romantic - the little things he does throughout had me swooning - the winks, the texts.  A real dream!  Hayden - I liked her too.  She's worked hard to be a vet and loves her job.  Her heart is huge and I felt for her as she waded through so much trouble.  The two together were a beautiful pairing.  They worked.  I liked the plot as well - a little bit of danger and mystery always adds to a romance story.  Ms. Dover has written a story that kept me interested and intrigued and rooting for the Hero and heroine throughout.  I have not yet read the previous books in this series but already have downloaded "Catching Summer" and plan to check out the rest as well.  Ms. Dover has found herself a new fan with "Defending Hayden".    (received copy for honest review)

"Mail Order Baron" (Cynthia Woolf) ★★★

BOOK SUMMARY
When her parents died, Molly McGregor did what she needed to survive in New York City all alone. She took a job for a well respected banker, but made a discovery that put her life in danger. Now in 1882 she is fleeing New York for the western frontier, Molly makes the desperate decision to become a mail order bride in Tombstone, Arizona Territory. She doesn't hope for much, just that her new husband will be strong enough to protect her from the danger she fears will follow.
Ben King was too busy making his fortune in silver to worry about a wife or family. Now he's rich, well known, owns half the town of Tombstone, and is utterly alone. When his heart becomes entangled with his best friend's new wife, he decides drastic action is required and contracts a mail order bride. He requests someone plain, someone simple to warm his hearth and home, someone he can be sure won't rouse his passion or complicate his life. He's tired of fancy women chasing him for his money, and even more tired of hoping any woman could be different. He doesn't believe in true love, and doesn't want the complications that would come with it. He doesn't have time for complicated. He has an empire to run.
But Molly is a shock to his senses. She doesn't care about his money or his fame. All she wants from him is a safe haven, security, and a new last name. Ben tries to keep his heart out of danger, but danger seems to be Molly's middle name. When a rich and powerful enemy chases his beautiful new bride halfway across the country to extract vengeance, Ben discovers his heart is not nearly as cold as he'd hoped. Their passion fires hot, hot enough to kill...more than hot enough to burn them both.

CAT'S REVIEW

"Mail Order Baron" by Cynthia Woolf is a historical romance about a mail order bride.  After her arrival, Molly discovers that Ben, her husband, is in love with his friend's wife.  Of course, Molly is in danger and that is the reason for her becoming a mail order bride to begin with.  At times I liked Molly and other times, she annoyed me a bit.  It seemed she expected instant true love.  Ben is likable, even if he is hung up on someone else.  Of course, the danger helps to bring a bit of life to the book.  Unfortunately, while the story held promise, the writing style felt very stiff to me and it was, at times, a bit tough to continue.  I'm glad I did as the story itself isn't terrible.  Overall, not a bad read but not overly exciting or memorable either.  (received copy from NetGalley for honest review)

Eva Leigh’s deliciously sexy Wicked Quills of London series continues as a Lady’s secret career writing erotic fiction is jeopardized by real-life romance . . .

In society circles she’s known as the Watching Wallflower—shy, quiet, and certainly never scandalous. Yet beneath Lady Sarah Frampton’s demure façade hides the mind of The Lady of Dubious Quality, author of the most titillating erotic fiction the ton has ever seen. Sarah knows discovery would lead to her ruin, but marriage—to a vicar, no less—could help protect her from slander. An especially tempting option when the clergyman in question is the handsome, intriguing Jeremy Cleland.

Tasked with unmasking London’s most scandalous author by his powerful family, Jeremy has no idea that his beautiful, innocent bride is the very woman he seeks to destroy. His mission must remain a secret, even from the new wife who stirs his deepest longings. Yet when the truth comes to light, Sarah and Jeremy’s newfound love will be tested. Will Sarah’s secret identity tear them apart or will the temptations of his wallflower wife prove too wicked to resist?

EXCERPT

Now it was her turn to laugh. “I’m hardly enviable, Mr. Cleland.”
His expression shifted to thoughtfulness. “I wonder why you might say that.”
“I have…everything a woman could want,” she acknowledged, matching her stride to his.
“Such as?”
“Wealth, position. If there’s a material thing that I desire, I simply have to ask, and it’s mine.” She shook her head. “And I’m grateful for these things. I truly am. And yet…”
“And yet…?” he prompted gently.
“It comes at a high price,” she admitted.
“What is that price?”
She considered this. Never before had she spoken so openly to anyone. Not her friends, or her family. But here, now, to be with this man, and to consider the foundations of her life, was both odd and deeply right. At last, she said, “Freedom.”
He contemplated her perceptively. “Must be very restricting,” he murmured. “The responsibilities of your position in society. Not to mention the fact that you’re a woman.” He blushed a little at that word.
It was a charming—but also gently erotic—blush. Her own cheeks warmed.
He continued, “You haven’t the liberty that a man in your place might have.”
“Indeed, no.” She gave a small, strained laugh. “You must think me dreadful to take issue with my admittedly fortunate circumstance.”
He fell briefly silent. “I know a little about having one’s role be predetermined.” They stopped walking, and she gazed up at him. Cool sunlight carved hollows in his cheeks and gilded his eyelashes. “Being a vicar means I must be a model to everyone in my parish. I have to be more pious, more humble, more self-sacrificing. I have to be better at everything while also being deferential. I certainly cannot admit to being an ordinary human man.”
Their gazes held at that word, man. Awareness of him sizzled. His height, his physicality. That suppressed desire. Her own body warmed in response.
She tiled her head to one side, imagining what it must be like to live such a restrained life. “Sounds exhausting.”
“Not unlike being a duke’s daughter, I imagine.” He smiled at her, and that lush warmth continued to gathered through her.
“I never would have thought I’d have much in common with a vicar,” she said with a laugh.
“Nor I with you,” he answered, his smile softening. “But here we are, in this garden.”
“So we are.” Strange how the world worked, that she discovered a man such as him on a day that had started out so perfectly ordinary. It was almost…miraculous. Did miracles happen? She went to church as a matter of form, not faith, though the ritual gave her comfort. Still, it was a revelation to learn that men of God were mortal just like anyone else, with the same needs and frustrations anybody might experience.
She ought to have imagined as such. She often imbued people in her mind with hidden motivations and secrets. He was no exception.
“And does your…wife…feel as you do?” She inwardly grimaced at her lack of tact, but she needed to know whether or not he had someone with whom he could confide. It seemed a shame, a right shame, that he should be alone in this world.
“No wife, I’m afraid,” he said with a self-deprecating grin.
A strange relief shot through her. She reasoned that it must be because it wouldn’t do to flirt with a married man. “Stick around the London Season long enough,” she replied. “An earl’s son, with a living? You’ll make someone a fine catch.”
“I’m just a humble country vicar,” he answered. “Hardly the stuff of a doting mama’s dream for her daughter.”
“You might be surprised.” Without a doubt, she and Mr. Cleland could never be a match. Even if she wanted to marry, he stood too far beneath her to warrant any possibility of courtship. Duke’s daughters and vicars—though they might be sons of earls—made for an improbable, mismatched pairing.
A vicar could never be married to a woman who wrote anonymous erotic novels, either. The very idea was ruinous.
But damn and all the other curse words she wasn’t allowed to use—she liked Mr. Cleland. The way his mind worked, how he spoke to her like a person of equal intelligence, the sensual quality within him. It wasn’t all her writer’s fancy. Something burned in him and it lured her closer, closer, drawn toward the mysteries of this man. Even Lady Josephina wouldn’t find someone half as interesting in her adventures.
And…he was exceptionally attractive. In a way she’d never experienced with another man before. She’d met handsome gentlemen in the past, but Mr. Cleland lit a spark within her, low and hot.
A shame, really, that Sarah couldn’t have been someone else. Because, if she had…she might give him serious consideration.
But that was never to be. She was who she was, and he was who he was, and they would have to be friends—nothing more.
So absorbed was she in this thought, that she didn’t hear footsteps approaching until they were almost upon her. Turning, she saw her mother coming down the path, wearing a pinched expression.
“There you are,” Lady Wakefield said impatiently. She nodded at Mr. Cleland, barely acknowledging him. Sarah felt a small stab of shame at her mother’s rudeness. But a vicar didn’t warrant much attention. “This sun has given me a headache. It’s time to go.”
“Yes, Mama.” Before the words had left her mouth, her mother had spun on her heel and strode off back toward the main house.
Sarah offered Mr. Cleland a remorseful smile. “I’m so sorry.”
“Nothing to apologize for,” he said easily, and it was clear he meant it. He bowed. “It was a genuine pleasure to meet you, Lady Sarah.”
“I feel the same way.” They smiled at each other. For a long time, neither, it seemed, willing to move away.
“Now, Sarah,” her mother called out.
Sarah sighed. Her gaze drifted back to the hedge maze. Could she drop her fan? As they both bent to retrieve it, she might whisper to him an invitation to meet her there in a few moments. And then… She could taste those gently curved lips of his. Oh, she’d experienced a few chaste kisses before, but never anything she truly desired. But she wanted to kiss Mr. Cleland. She craved feeling his mouth against hers, and seeing if her imagination was correct about him.
He, too, looked at the maze. Was he thinking the same thoughts? Did he want to savor her? A delectable thought, one that made her feel both languid and powerfully alive all at once.
Their gazes met. He turned gorgeously pink.
He was thinking of kissing her!

CAT'S REVIEWS

"TEMPTATIONS OF A WALLFLOWER"

I really enjoyed this story of love conquering all.  Sarah and Jeremy fight their attraction due to the society's rules of the time.  However, love will only stand by for so long.  Sarah is terrific - she believes in herself and her craft, even if she cannot reveal the truth.  Jeremy, so upstanding - to do what he is told to do yet not wanting to.  Together the two are fire!  Ms. Leigh captured my interest and my heart with this tale.  It's not just their love, it's about being true to who you are.  Both are hiding beneath society's standards but when the truth comes out, will true love prevail?  This was a very entertaining story that I adored.  (received copy for honest review)
★★★★.5

"FOREVER YOUR EARL"
Once again, Ms. Leigh has written a story that takes on what is considered "right" and "proper" for the time period (1800's) and shown that even then, the masses didn't necessarily agree.  I really, really liked Evelyn - she is independent and loves fiercely.  Daniel is also a passionate one that takes his life and love seriously.  Ms. Leigh's writing is one that has depth and gives the characters and story the attention they deserve.  The reader can easily follow along, often feeling as if he or she are right there next to Evelyn or Daniel. Ms. Leigh's writing has me enraptured throughout the entire tale - I find that I get to know each character well.  I understand the plot and never feel lost or unsure. I am enjoying this series and look forward to more.  (received copy for honest review)
★★★★.5

"SCANDAL TAKES THE STAGE"

Once again, Ms. Leigh has created a tale that has strong characters, both male and female.  Margaret and Cameron are the epitome of love and strength. Their tale is, again, one of what is considered right and wrong at the time.Margaret fights her attraction to him, while he works hard to convince her he's the one.   While the story flows and the plot has promise, I didn't quite feel the same connection with these two characters or the plot as I did with "Forever Your Earl" and "Temptations of a Wallflower".   That being said, I found that I did enjoy the other two slightly more than this one.  (received copy for honest review)

The heavy door to the lobby opens with a loud smack, drawing attention to those waiting to be seen. The counseling center is private and held in high regard. The majority of our clients come from money, but a few of our therapists work pro bono, counseling those from working class backgrounds similar to mine. Some are like Loretta, suffering from eating disorders and mild anxiety issues. But the majority are severely damaged individuals with suicidal tendencies. I catch sight of one of our more heartbreaking cases sitting in the corner beside his father. Poor kid, he can’t be more than fifteen. And there he waits with his wrists bandaged down to his elbows.
I want to walk over and give him and his dad a hug. Both look like they could use one. Those people on the street who offer free hugs to strangers? I’m one of them. I always have been.
Today though, I refrain, staying focused on Loretta. “Good job,” I tell her, knowing how hard she’s trying. “I’ll see you next week.”
“Sol?”
I turn my head. I know that voice. Loretta doesn’t bother with a goodbye, leaving me instead with a “Mm, yummy” when she sees who called to me.
“Yummy”. Yes, that about sums up Finn.
Finn O’Brien, damn. You know those cute guys . . . those really hot kind of cute guys? Finn blows them away. I’m not typically attracted to redheads, but I make the exception for Finn. Oh, and Jamie from Outlander.
Finn has the whole bad boy thing going on, tats crawling along his muscular arms, hair buzzed on the sides and short on top. A modern Mohawk, it think that’s what it’s called. Oh, and don’t get me started on that dimple on his right cheek that appears when he grins, just like he’s doing now.
“Hi, Finn,” I say. His brother is with him, the one that looks the most like him. He’s older by a few years, handsome, polished, perfect. Well, if you like that sort of thing. Me? Did I mention how sexy Finn is?
His light blue eyes sparkle as I pass Zorina, the poor girl trapped in her own world following a brutal assault on the train. She pretends to play instruments that aren’t there, reality slipping so far from her grasp, it’s almost out of her reach.
I tilt my head in the direction of Finn’s brother because by now it’s obvious I’m gawking at Finn. “You’re Seamus, right?” I ask.
“No, I’m Declan,” he answers in a deep voice.
Oh, right. The district attorney. “Sorry. I know that Finn has a few brothers,” I offer. I should be impressed seeing how Declan has made quite a name for himself in the political arena, and I am. But Finn is who lures my attention and keeps it, despite my best efforts to appear more relaxed. “What are you doing here?” I ask.
He shrugs. “Waiting for you.”
Declan sighs, moving away from us and reaching for his phone. I grin even though I’m sure Finn is feeding me a line. The last time I saw him was at my cousin Sofia’s wedding. I’d brought my friend Alex as my date and Finn, well, he showed up with some girl with big breasts and very little clothes. And funny enough, I still had a hard time keeping my eyes off him.
“Really?” I ask.
“Yeah. Really,” he answers, leaning back on his heels and making a show of checking me out. “Don’t forget, you still owe me a kiss.”

CAT'S REVIEW

"Let Me" by Cecy Robson - Wow!  Ms. Robson has done it again!  I was biting my nails and holding back tears as I turned each page.  Ms. Robson has a knack for grabbing my heart, ripping it apart and then mending it back together again.  Finn and Sol - two hearts that are so broken but need each other beyond belief.  Finn- tough, sexy and so vulnerable.  Sol, sweet and kind yet so unsure of herself.  I just wanted to reach in and give each a really big hug.  Of course, there are ups and downs throughout - when it's sunny, it's really sunny but boy, some really big storm clouds do roll in on our couple that threaten their HEA.  Will they be strong enough to weather the storm?  Can they rely on each other and use each other's strengths to become better and stronger together?  All I can tell you is you really, really need to read this one to find the answers -the journey isn't necessarily a pretty one and certainly has some major bumps along the way.  My heart was twisting while witnessing Finn and Sol's path and praying for them to find peace.   Ms. Robson, in my opinion, has a stellar series with the O'Brien Family - I have read the previous books (although I do believe this can be read as a stand alone but why would you?) and with each tale, I find myself enraptured and not able to put the book down until finished.  While this is certainly not a light, feel-good throughout tale, it kept me thinking and feeling about it long after I put it down - a real winner in my book when that happens.  Thank you again, Ms. Robson, for creating such a beautiful story of love, family and the not so perfect world we live in.  This is truly a story that, not only held my interest while reading, but was an almost constant in my thoughts afterwards too.    (received copy for honest review)
