BOOK INFORMATION

TITLE – Devon Drake - Cornerback SERIES – First & Ten Series AUTHOR – Jean Joachim GENRE – Sports Romance, Contemporary Romance

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Devon Drake, star cornerback, has it all: hot super model girlfriend and pro football career, or does he? A childhood friend wanders back into his life, upsetting his ideal existence. Is it finally time to tell her the truth about what happened fifteen years ago?
Stormy Gregory is on the run from an abusive man. Her best friend offers her a safe place at the shelter for abused women and children. Grateful to be out of harm’s way, Stormy helps with a charitable event, not expecting to run into Devon Drake, her friend’s brother. Will she run again rather than face rejection?
Cracks in his perfect world threaten the cornerback’s starting lineup status. An unwelcome surprise short-circuits Stormy’s attempt to build a new life. Can they pull together or will the secret that separates the former friends keep them on a downward spiral?

EXCERPT

Devon plopped down on the couch and rubbed his neck, attempting to ease the tension in the muscles. The Kings had fought like wild men to reach this point in their quest to capture the Super Bowl for the second year in a row. Coach Bass, usually relaxed around the team, had been increasingly moody and tense as the day of the big game drew near. The footballer chuckled to himself. Coach was getting married after the season ended. Maybe that’s making him nervous. Jo Parker, Coach Bass’s fiancée, was one beautiful woman. He got goofy around her sometimes, making the team snicker and tease. The cornerback’s thoughts turned to his girlfriend. Why don’t I behave like that around Jackie?

CHARACTER BIO

Devon Drake - Devon Drake spent his childhood running, playing and hanging with his little sister, Samantha, and her friend, Stormy. When he hit junior high, football became his passion and he moved on from his young, adoring female friends.
With hard work and determination, Devon became a star. Always the fastest runner on any team, he chose to become a cornerback. His huge high school success led to an offer, after college, from the pro team, the St. Louis Sidewinders.
In St. Louis, he earned the reputation as a “shut down cornerback” – the guy who could out run, out-perform any wide receiver.
He opted to join The Connecticut Kings. At a charity event, he met Jackie Lawrence, a super model. They dated, much to Devon’s surprise. A humble young man, he never quite saw what she saw in him. But super models don’t achieve success hanging on the arm of attractive football players. So Devon had to content himself with a long distance relationship
Fifteen years after his last encounter with Stormy Gregory, they meet again. Devon knows his behavior to her at their last meeting had been atrocious. Maybe now he could make amends.
His former childhood friend had turned into a beautiful young woman who was fleeing an abusive man. Devon’s heart was touched. Could he make it up to her for the bad way he had behaved? Devon Drake discovers that old feelings don’t die. Can he convince Stormy he’s sincere? And what about Jackie? Read Devon Drake, Cornerback, book 4 in the First & Ten series and find out.

CAT'S REVIEW

"Devon Drake - Cornerback" by Jean C. Joachim.  Here we have the story of Devon, a pro football player, that reconnects with his sister's friend, Stormy.  I did like Devon and Stormy - I loved that they had a history together.  It's always fun when the main characters share a friendship of sorts prior to becoming romantically involved.  Devon is sexy as heck and Stormy is a sweet girl that is struggling to overcome a rough spot in her life.    While I feel that this story had so much promise, it fell a bit short for me.  The writing style was a bit simplified for me.  The conversations were stilted - to me, I don't think a person would necessarily speak so formally, especially all of the time.  Also, the author revisited with characters from previous books.  While normally I don't mind that - it took up a lot of time and took away from Devon and Stormy's story.  I think Ms. Joachim has caught on to something with this series, I just would like to see the writing flow more easily and a bit more focus on the Hero/heroine of the story.    (received copy for honest review)

EXCERPT

“Even better.” Carla licked her lips. “I’ll bet she has no idea you’re having sexual fantasies about her.”
“I’m not. It was an accident,” he hissed.
“Sure, sure. Keep telling yourself that. Wonder what she’d think if she knew?”
“Don’t, Carla. Please don’t. I’m begging you.” Griff reached for her arm, but she shook him off.
Buddy faced the quarterback. “What the hell did you do?”
“You don’t wanna know.”
“Oh no. You didn’t?” His eyebrows rose.
Griff nodded. “Guilty.”
“Whoa, stand back, Tony. There’s gonna be some fireworks in a minute.” Buddy pushed Hastings to the wall.
“You wouldn’t be lying, now, would ya?” Carla asked, directing her stare at Buddy.
“See for yourself.” He gestured to the brunette at the corner table.
“Lauren!” Carla cupped her hands and yelled.
Lauren stood up, turning to face them.
“You Lauren?”
“Please, please, Carla. I’m sorry, so sorry,” Griff whispered. “Don’t do this.”

CHARACTER BIOS

GRIFF MONTGOMERY - His journey from the tiny town of Adams, Indiana to national fame as a top quarterback, playing for the Connecticut Kings, had been one of hard work and dedication to the game of football. He became a family man when he moved in with his widowed sister to help her raise her two kids.
Totally focused on his career and being a stand-in dad, Griff worked hard. He believed that allowed him to play hard, too, at least when it came to women. A natural athlete, handsome and sexy, he’d been called a man-whore with a girl in every road-trip city. But once his family left for the West Coast, his compartmentalized existence fell apart.
Putting his life back together meant committing to a woman, marriage and kids. But could a “player” become a man-whore no more? He wouldn’t put money on a new beginning happening with a woman who had sworn off marriage for good. But there she was, beautiful and hiding something. He couldn’t ignore her, no matter how hard he tried.
LAUREN FARRADAY - Reeling from a personal tragedy and a recent divorce, Lauren wanted peace above all else. Tending to her ailing father, and trying to make a living as a freelance decorator didn’t leave time or energy for men. Love had kicked her in the teeth, so she wanted no part of it. Not now. Not ever.
Forced, by the court, to let seductive Griff Montgomery into her life, she built a wall around her heart. No way was she going to trust the man with a girl in every port. Despite their chemistry, she tried to keep the quarterback at arm’s length. Fearing heartbreak, she kept her secret hidden. How could she expect him to abandon his relationship deal-breaker for a woman like her?

CAT'S REVIEW

"Griff Montgomery-Quarterback" by Jean Joachim.  This tells the tale of Griff - a professional quarterback, and Lauren, an interior designer, that meet under strained circumstances.  Although I liked the premise of the story, I didn't feel the chemistry between Griff and Lauren, at least in the first part of the story, once they became a couple, I liked them a lot.  However, throughout the story, it was a bit bothersome that, despite their commitment to each other, they didn't lean on each other during the rough times or holidays.  I didn't understand why they wouldn't have Thanksgiving together if he had a home game.   If I went through some of the trials they each did while together,  I'd want my love at my side.  I really wanted to give this more stars but those types of things truly bothered me.  I liked both characters - Lauren seemed like a sweetie and Griff showed his true character when he stepped up to the plate to help his sister.   And, like I said, once they became a couple, I liked them, but with the events of beginning of the story, I also found it odd that Griff searched out Lauren and she was so open to his ideas.  It was a fairly quick read and, being a football fan,  I liked reading Griff's play by play during his games and practices  and his uneasiness of having a backup QB brought in.  This one was just OK for me - Spike, the K-9 star of the story, was adorable so if you enjoy football and dogs, you might want to check this one out.   (received copy for honest review).
