Cat's Review

Overall, Into The Flames Anthology is a group of really quick reads that are enjoyable and fun.  There's some danger, angst, laughter and fun - makes for stories that keep the reader reading and wanting more.  I received the following four books from the anthololgy in exchange for honest reviews.

"Hook Me Up" (Adele Downs) is a really quick story - it starts off with our heroine stuck in a tree!  Of course, the sexy firefighter arrives to save the day!  I loved the chemistry between these two - and the whole story just made me smile.  It is a super quick read and I would have very much liked it to have been longer.  I thought the ending was slightly rushed due to the brevity of the story.    (received copy for honest review)

"Rescue Me" (NJ Walters) - this one has a touch of the paranormal which brought a whole new take on the story.  I really liked Frank and Martha and together they were sweet and meant to be.  It broke my heart that the road was long for them.  Frank, being such a big, strong firefighter, was so vulnerable it made him such a sweet guy.  Martha was terrific - her acceptance of him was perfect.  (received copy for honest review)

"Slow Burner" (Sam Cheever) Here's another short story that captivated me.  We have Hilda and Duncan- reunited but through a tense situation.  This one has some mystery and danger and some great character relationship.  Ms. Cheever has done a great job of including many elements of a good story into such a brief tale.   (received copy for honest review)


FireBrew (Liz Crowe) - This is a pretty intense read that kept me captivated from the start.  It's a bit darker but not any less entertaining.  Jane is pretty much a mess and George isn't much better but together, it seems, they are better, or are they?  Ms. Crowe writes a story where the characters lean towards real yet are a bit extreme.  She shows that life isn't always pretty and people have lots of baggage to live and deal with.  It's how they deal that makes life so interesting.  (received copy for honest review)

The roar of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Rachel’s block and the rev of a throttle in her driveway announced Jack’s arrival. Legs tried to appear nonchalant when he walked through the poolside gate, but the sight of his sun-streaked hair and tanned, muscular good looks nearly knocked her off her seat. She eased her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose to get a better look.
When he stepped into the pool area dressed in black jeans, black biker boots, and a white muscle shirt that framed his pumped-up shoulders and biceps, she caught her breath. Everyone in the group said “hey” and Rachel offered him a cold drink, but his focus had remained on her. He slid his sunglasses on top of his head and nodded in her direction.
Legs remembered his gaze meeting hers before his attention strayed to her gold and black bikini then savored every inch of her skin. An appreciative smirk curled his lips and desire flashed in his beautiful blue eyes. He took a long pull of the soft drink someone handed him and then set the can down on the patio table. He looked her way and said, “Want to go for a ride?” The invitation came out like a dare.


CAT'S REVIEW

Adele Downs has done it again!  She has written a tale that is light and full of love.  The characters - Legs and Jack - I absolutely love!!  Legs is spunky and full of life.  Jack is yummy!  Oh, and in love with Legs!   I loved how Jack pushes Legs, ever so gently, to move on after the passing of her beloved aunt.  He's patient and kind with her.  And we can't forget Aunt Ada!  She never approved of Jack and even from beyond the grave, she tries to keep them apart!  Legs and Jack set off sparks whenever they are together and everyone in town sees it.  From page one, the chemistry is off the charts for these two and I turned each page rooting for them to have their HEA.   Mix in all the characters you find in a small town, and you have a story that will make you smile and chuckle throughout.  Thank you Ms. Downs, for once again bringing a little bit of joy into my life.

He smoothed her hair and rubbed a thick tendril between his thumb and forefinger. “I am Gunnar.” He pronounced the name Goo-nar.
An emblem of the sun, surrounded by a circle, had been branded on the back of his powerful hand. Penny touched the scar while he held a length of her hair, recognizing Freyr’s sacred insignia from her textbooks. “The pain must have been excruciating.” Without thinking, she lifted the old wound to her mouth and laid kisses along its perimeter before pressing a kiss to the icon inside.
Tremors vibrated across her lips when they touched the ancient symbol and her body tingled with the contact. The brand grew warm and then hot against her mouth, though it did not burn. She ran her tongue over the thick scars to erase the heat, and then licked the center, finishing with a tiny swirl.
Gunnar’s gasp of surprise was the last thing she expected when she lifted her head. He released her hair and drew away.
“I’m sorry. I don’t know what got into me. Have I offended you?” She’d always been popular with men, and comfortable around them, but her behavior with Gunnar was bold, even for her. She sat up. “Am I under some kind of spell?”
Gunnar shook his head. “I used my powers to heal you, but your free will remains intact.”
She searched his face for clues about what to do next, because desire shone behind the wary expression in his eyes. Something else shone there, too. Gratitude. Penny waited for Gunnar’s reply without letting go of his disfigured hand.
He said, “Kindness isn’t something I’m used to finding. Perhaps you’d be less inclined toward compassion if you knew what I’d done to deserve this brand of servitude.”
She reached out and draped an arm around his neck to bring him closer. Their gazes locked and held. Gunnar’s eyes were like pools of ice blue water that pulled her in and down.
Her breathing slowed while the sound of her heartbeat rushed blood through her ears. “I am Penelope. And if you’re from Alfheim, I know who and what you are. I just don’t understand why you’re here.” How could she deserve his rare, benevolent gifts? She was just an ordinary woman from an ordinary town, barely scraping by.
His warm breath grazed her cheek in shallow rushes, lifting goose bumps across her skin. His wide, firm mouth smelled of sweet ground parsley and fresh-picked mint. “Sometimes we get what we need, simply because we ask. That’s the beauty and power of the unexpected.”

CAT'S REVIEW

"Her Immortal Viking" by Adele Downs.   For a novella, this one has it all - a little suspense and action, drama, love and even some humor.  Penny is a hard working college student that seems to pick the wrong guy all the time.   Gunnar is a Light Elf, living out his immortal life by fulfilling a sentence for a crime - he must clean up after mortals, without them knowing.   How Penny and Gunnar meet was really cute.  Even though things happened fast between them, it was evident how they truly felt for one another.   I enjoyed this and, although I'm not always a big fan of novellas, Ms. Downs did a really good job of incorporating everything there should be for a story to be entertaining and enjoyable.   Of course,  I'm greedy and would have loved more but I finished the book feeling good and smiling.   (received copy for honest review)

Clearly, the man had no concept of his effect on her.
When Daisy pulled up to Trey’s house and saw him standing at the base of the steps to greet her in nothing but low slung denims and work boots, she’d found it hard to breathe. Daisy hadn’t expected to spend Christmas Eve with Trey too, but she was glad he asked. “Sure. I’d like that.” The heaviness around her heart broke free and her mood lifted. She imagined the two of them in an embrace, making love beneath the twinkling lights of Trey’s Christmas tree, and realized she was…happy.
It had been so long since she’d known the feeling it took seconds to realize what had come over her. She smiled and savored the moment. Trey made her happy. Spending Christmas with him was the best gift the season could bring.
There would be no snowfall in Texas. Or winter’s chill.  No downhill sledding, hot cocoa, or ice covered boots. There might not be snippets of holly gracing the table, but there would undoubtedly be mistletoe. With that final thought, Daisy leaned over and gave Trey a deep, gotta’ get-back-to-work kiss.
He smiled at her, and just like that… Daisy found her Christmas spirit.


CAT'S REVIEW
"Her Christmas Cowboy" by Adele Downs is a sequel to "Kissing Her Cowboy". 
Daisy and Trey - two souls that have helped each other through difficult times, and, along the way, fell in love.  Now, Daisy is struggling with a decision that would take her away from Trey.  Trey is a sweetheart - really no other way to describe him.  He works hard and loves Daisy with all that he is.  To be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of Daisy, at least not in this book.  I understood her feeling a bit homesick, especially at Christmas time but she couldn't see what was right in front of her.  In my eyes, she did redeem herself a bit at the end.  This is a sequel to "Kissing Her Cowboy" and I highly recommend reading that first.  I had not and did feel a bit lost as to the backstory of the characters, even though Ms. Downs does touch on the history, the story is just too short to rehash it all.  Overall, this is a nice holiday tale about love and Christmas spirit.  (Received copy for honest review)
